Burra

Hi everyone, yesterday we visited the town of Burra, about 40 kilometres east of Clare.  It was established in 1845 after the discovery of copper and retains many original buildings, cottages etc. Lots of photos below!  Weather today is very hot, just above 40 degrees  Unfortunately the caravan park pool is closed today (filtering problems) so we are sweating it out. We leave here on Monday, we were going to stay in Adelaide but booked out, so are going to Gawler, just north, & will do a couple of trips to the city from there. .I was stung on the neck by a bee 4 days ago, & still have a big red itchy lump there, but otherwise we are both well.

On the way to the"Monster Mine"- one of the first mines in the world to use the then revolutionary  open cut method.

Above & below, Redruth Gaol.  it was built in 1856, the first gaol in SA outside Adelaide, as Burra was SA's largest country town. It housed 2 employees & 30 male & female prisoners It closed in 1894, & between the years 1897-1922 was a reformatory for girls. Between 1943-1956 it was privately owned & 1999 the film Breaker Morant was filmed here. Now owned by the National Trust. .
