Pemberton - Tall Timber Country

Hi, still enjoying the Tall Timber forests or WA, south east of Margaret River.  This region is called the Southern Forest region, & has  many wineries, orchards, cows, sheep & wood mills . The area has lots of rolling hills & is well known for the Karri Trees, a very tall straight  hardwood forest .  We have taken a few drives through the forests, the pictures do not do them justice.  There are a couple of trees here, about 70 metres high where you can climb them through a "winding ladder" to a platform at a 70 meter lookout, I would  rather die!

Look closely, above & below, steel step platform ascending the tree

Ginny on the bottom 3 rungs, never go higher!  In this pic  you can see it is not actually steps but  horrible ladder rungs. I would rather kiss a snake!

This picture is zoomed, a platform at the top 60 to 70 metres above the ground, on the left of the trunk you can see the horrible ladder winding around the trunk.

Finally a park where we can light a fire!.  Nuked a steak on top, and loved it!

View or Pemberton, where we are now staying nestled in the hills amongst the tall timber

Views of the Warren River

Another high platform, about 75 metres up the tree, the view gives a 40 kilometre view over the forests or so I have been told,

Halfway platform

Some views of the stunning countryside here in south east WA.

Pemberton Hotel, we had a great lunch here yesterday.

Railway & Tramway Museum

Looking down the main street of Pemberton over the rolling hills, it is really a lovely town.

Town was & is reliant on wood industry, but now also wine, food & tourism industry.  Some old workers cottages.

Margaret River Gourmet Food and Wine Festival

Hi everyone, today we went to the inaugural M/ River Gourmet Food & Wine Festival  at Leeuwin Estate Winery.  We had a great day there, tasted some beautiful food & wine.  We arrived early, & by the time we left the place was packed, about 5,000 people.  Below is a photo of the entrance,  Grae & I got to go through the VIP entrance because I am so good looking ( actually because Grae walks with a stick & I asked them could we take the shortcut to avoid queuing! )

Blues Band playing in the tent to soothe people while they were queuing for tickets.  Great music

Various "Pop Up" restaurants from regional wineries, small plate of food cost $7, we shared about 5 different meals, including slow braised pork, roasted lamb shoulder with wattle seed roll, & cutlets of lamb with green bean & nectarine salad, dukkah & feta crumble..

More of Margaret River Region

Hi, some photos around Margaret River.  Below is photos of Hamelin Bay, the old jetty remains.

Augusta, located near the most southernmost point of WA.  Again a lovely little town with a great bakery,.

Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse, built in in  the 1860's. The tallest lighthouse on mainland Australia.

Scenes on the west coast, very near where the Indian Ocean meets the Southern Ocean at the southern most point of WA.
